Alley Cat Advocates Receives $75,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities® to Sterilize 2,000 Cats

Louisville, Kentucky – March 1, 2010 Alley Cat Advocates received a generous $75,000 grant this week to increase its number of spay/neuter surgeries for unowned, free-roaming cats from 4000 to 6000 over the next two years. The organization’s 10 year-old sterilization program proactively fights the area’s dire cat overpopulation problem by spaying and neutering stray cats.

The grant-funded Alley Cat Neighborhoods program offers free spay/neuter services for stray, free-roaming cats being cared for in Louisville's 40215 zip code, the zip code identified by Louisville Metro Animal Services as having the highest number of stray cats turned in to that facility.  Alley Cat Advocates and Metro Animal Services will work together to monitor the number of stray cats turned in over the course of the two year project with the goal of reducing that number.

“We are excited to increase the total number of spay/neuter surgeries at our organization and look forward to an exciting collaboration with Louisville Metro Animal Services as we work together to reduce euthanasia of healthy cats in our community,” said Karen Little, executive director and co-founder of Alley Cat Advocates. “We hope that our Alley Cat Neighborhoods program and the success it generates will become a model for other organizations across the country.”

“Alley Cat Advocates’ Alley Cat Neighborhoods program is an excellent example of collaboration,” said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc.  “Partnerships like these are the key to successful, low-cost spay/neuter in local communities.”
